Item 0049

Photo

Date: 1905

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 2.5"w × 3"h

Description: A somewhat blurry, small photo of a young woman.

Handwriting, reverse: "1905 - Ida Rotruff. Died Jan 17" '57"

In searching for information, I found an entry for a woman with a very similar last name: Ida Mae Rotroff, who is listed as having been born in January of 1888 and having died in January of 1957 in Polk County, Florida. It also lists her 1940 residence as Allen County, Ohio. Her husband was James Robert Hennon. Ida and James Hennon are listed in the 1910 census as living in Lima, Ohio, with a baby daughter, Mildred Hennon.

Item 0050

Photo

Date: early 1900s

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 2.5"w × 3"h

Description: Unidentified man posing humorously with a bonnet.

Item 0051

Photo

Date: circa early 1900s

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 2.5"w × 3"h

Description: Close up portrait of Condy Cooper. At least, that's the name written in pencil on the back of this photo. On Ancestry.com, I found a person named Carl Condy Cooper, who was born on July 12, 1879, in Celina, Ohio. Given the location and dates, this could be him. From Ancestry:

He married Mary V. Maher on July 13, 1901, in Sandusky, Michigan. He then married Minnie M. Miller and they had one son together. He died as a young father on July 5, 1913, in Battle Creek, Michigan, at the age of 33.

It further states that he "died from shock from railroad accident."

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 3.5"w × 5.25"h

Photo

Date: 1890s

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 3.5"w × 5.25"h

Description: Close up of a woman wearing ornate 1890's-style clothing. The photo frame has the same design as item 0052, so this could possibly be the mother of the baby in that photo. This could possibly be the same woman who appears in photo 0036.

Item 0054

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 4.25"w × 4.25"h

Based on Walter's age and Bessie's "Gibson Girl" hair style in this photo, I estimate this photo to be from about 1910. On the back, a beautiful handwriting specimen in red ink.

Handwriting, reverse: "Out of School Life - Into Life's School. - Bessie Glenn. - Walter Linn."

Item 0060-b

Item 0061

Item 0068

Photo

Date: 1890s

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 7.5"w × 4.5"h

Description: Unidentified family posing in what appears to be the side yard of a really large house. A grape arbor is nearby. I wonder what the items near the porch are for—it looks like a ramp, a stoneware crock, and maybe a bucket. Might this have been the location of a well pump?

This is a moderately faded card-mounted photo that was enhanced a bit to increase contrast.

Item 0071

Photo

Date: 1913

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 9.75"w × 8"h

Description: Exterior photo of Brewster family members. This print is not mounted on a card and was apparently made much later, possibly from a photo of the original print.

Item 0072

Photo

Date: circa 1905

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 8"w × 5"h

Description: Exterior photo of the Loudenback family in their yard , Mercer county, Ohio. This is a very faded larger-format photo and I've increased the contrast a lot. The scratches on either side are actually brush strokes of glue from a sloppy paste-up job onto the cardboard backing.

L—R: My great-grandmother Ollie Loudenback (1888-1976); her father John Loudenback (1842-1929); his second wife Mary (Dock) Loudenback (1859-1920); Mary's father Philip Dock (1829-1907); and Ollie's younger sister, Trixie Loudenback (1894-1983).

It seems that Mary's mother, Harriet Amanda (Broom) Dock (1834-1915) was related to John "Appleseed" Chapman: Harriet's mother, Persis Broom, was born as Persis Chapman, a half-sister to Johnny (they had different mothers but their father was Nathaniel Chapman).

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 11.75"w × 10"h

Description: Large outdoor school photo. My great-grandfather, Walter Linn (1892-1975) stands in the back row, fifth from the left. He looks to be about 10 years old here, so I estimate this photo to be from around 1902. His older sister, Bertha Linn (1890-1968) was also a student. She is in the center of the photo, directly in front of the tallest boy in the back row.

Date: circa 1901

Type: Card-mounted photo

Item 0079

Photo

Date: circa 1910

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 5.5"w × 4"h

Description: Exterior group photo of...not sure...could be the employees of a company, or maybe the members of some local civic or religious organization. My great-great grandfather, Peter Linn, is in the middle row, second from left, holding up his left hand.

Item 0080

Photo

Date: circa 1931

Photo

Date: circa 1905

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 7"w × 4.75"h

Description: Classroom photo of Ollie Loudenback's high school. Ollie is third from the right in the second row. She appears to be about the same age (16, maybe?) as seen in item 0072.

Item 0084

Photo

Date: circa 1920s

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 9.5"w × 3.5"h

Description: Exterior panoramic photo of the Dayton YWCA. On the reverse, in very light pencil, someone wrote "Addie Lynn"—a misspelling of Addie Linn (1885-1977), my great-great-aunt. However, I don't believe that Addie is in this photo. Perhaps she was a YWCA member, but was unable to attend the group portrait.

Item 0119

Photo

Date: circa 1920s

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 7"w × 5"h

Description: There is mysterious writing on this landscape depicting the Peter Linn farmstead, possibly in the 1920s. The photo was in a falling-apart frame made of wood, glass, and nails. When I removed it for scanning, the top portion, which was folded over, revealed some letter/symbols whose meaning, if any, I cannot figure out. Reversing it did not help...

The same buildings appear in the the large-format prints from 1898 in 0073 and 0074. It looks like the barn's star symbol was redesigned in between that time period and this one.

Item 0119-b

Photo

Description: Reverse side of 0019. It turns out that this photo is also an order form. My great-grandfather, Walter Linn, ordered a 14 X 17 print of this photo, to be colorized, and placed behind convex glass. (This photo, in its frame, contained a front matte with oval cut-out, perhaps to demonstrate what the larger version would look like.)

The stamped form is hard to read, but to my eyes, here is what it says:

PROOF NO.: 426
HOW MANY: one

AGENTS NO.: 200
SHIP TO: Rockford O.
NAME: Walter Linn
POST OFFICE: Celina
R. F. D.: 1 - 38
HOUSE: Yellow
? - white
BARN: Steel grey
? - white
? - 3.98
AGENT: Monroe

Interestingly, in the upper-left corner, it looks like someone wrote "can't afford" and then crossed it out.

Item 0119-c

Photo

Item 0134

Photo

Date: circa 1923

Type: Card-mounted photo

Size: 5.25"w × 3.25 "h

Description: This photo is not card-mounted. It was likely distributed to the attendees of this gathering at the White Mountain Creamery Company. Since there are children in attendance, my guess is that this was some kind of summer or fall picnic event for families of the employees of the company.

I can identify Ollie Loudenback, along with son Paul, sitting in the front row a bit left of center. She's wearing a very wide-brimmed hat with a flower. Two to the right of her is, I believe, her sister-in-law Bertha Linn.

I think Peter Linn is in the back row, second from the left. He would have been around 64 years old at this time. In the 1920 census, he's still listed as a farmer, so I wonder if he was perhaps a supplier of this creamery.

Reverse, a stamped label: "THE WHITE MOUNTAIN CREAMERY CO - NEW BREMEN, OHIO."
